About Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast Cancer Awareness Month, corresponding to October every year in all countries of the world, is a month that helps to increase interest in this disease and provide the necessary support to raise awareness of its seriousness and early detection and treatment, as well as providing patients with mitigating care.
There are about 1.38 million new cases of breast cancer and 458,000 deaths from breast cancer annually (Globocan 2008, International Agency for Research on Cancer). Breast cancer is by far one of the most common types of cancer among women in both developed and developing countries. In recent years, cancer rates have been steadily rising in low- and middle-income countries due to increased life expectancy, high rates of urbanization and the adoption of Western lifestyles.
There is currently insufficient knowledge of the causes of breast cancer, so early detection remains the cornerstone of disease control. There is a great chance that breast cancer can be cured if it is detected early and the means to diagnose and treat it are available. But if it is detected late, the opportunity for treatment is often missed, a situation in which patients and their families need to be provided with palliative care services to ease their suffering.
