Egypt Healthcare Authority Highlights Achievements Over 5 Years in Line with Universal Health Coverage Day
The Egypt Healthcare Authority, under the leadership of Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of Egypt Healthcare Authority and General Supervisor of the Universal Health Insurance Project, celebrated Universal Health Coverage Day on December 12 by showcasing the key achievements of the Universal Health Insurance system in the first-phase governorates.
The Authority announced that over the past five years, 57 million medical and therapeutic services have been provided under the universal health coverage system. These include:
By 2024, the operation of all six first-phase governorates—Port Said, Luxor, Ismailia, South Sinai, Aswan, and Suez—was fully completed, with the number of beneficiaries reaching 5.4 million citizens.
The Authority highlighted that 33 million family medicine services were provided through 285 family medicine facilities across the six governorates. These units form the cornerstone of the universal health coverage system, delivering 80% of the healthcare services needed by citizens. Notably, families, rather than individuals, are considered the units of entitlement under the universal health insurance umbrella.
Dr. El-Sobky emphasized that the Authority operates 328 healthcare facilities, of which over 75% are accredited according to the standards of the General Authority for Accreditation and Health Regulation (GAHAR), recognized internationally by ISQua.
Dr. El-Sobky reiterated that delivering comprehensive, high-quality healthcare services and expanding access for beneficiaries are top priorities. He described the Universal Health Insurance Project as a pioneering model where the state bears the majority of healthcare costs, ensuring health equity and strengthening public trust in Egypt’s healthcare system.
He also noted that this year’s theme for Universal Health Coverage Day underscores the importance of government investment in healthcare as a fundamental right for citizens. This aligns with the vision of the Universal Health Insurance system and the Authority’s commitment to providing world-class healthcare services.
Dr. El-Sobky further highlighted the sustainable strategies adopted by the Authority to enhance the efficiency of services, positioning Egypt as a regional and global leader in universal health coverage.
By championing innovative healthcare solutions and adhering to global quality standards, the Egypt Healthcare Authority continues to exemplify excellence in healthcare delivery and equity for all citizens.
