The Egypt Healthcare Authority has launched an awareness campaign across all its healthcare facilities, in conjunction with World Diabetes Day, which is celebrated globally every year. This year's World Diabetes Day theme is "Breaking Barriers and Closing Gaps."
The campaign, launched by the Authority in the governorates of "Port Said, Luxor, Ismailia, South Sinai, Suez, and Aswan," aims to raise awareness about diabetes prevention, early diagnosis, and effective treatment, while highlighting the importance of proper nutrition, physical activity, and regular monitoring of blood sugar levels. The campaign includes various awareness activities tailored to the target groups, covering all age categories.
The campaign placed significant emphasis on educating children about healthy lifestyles, the importance of physical activity, and the prevention of diabetes. This was achieved through awareness activities in schools to ensure that children received the information easily. Activities included a puppet show at the Taiba Arts Exhibition in Aswan, educational activities for children attending Quran memorization schools in Luxor, a recreational day for children in Suez, and an awareness day at the Suez Canal Authority Club in Ismailia.
Additionally, the campaign involved distributing gifts and providing free screenings for children to ensure early detection and prevention of the disease. The awareness materials, including brochures and pamphlets, were distributed to parents of children diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The campaign also included outdoor activities, such as a mobile awareness bus offering screenings and awareness teams stationed in key public areas such as Anwar Sadat Square, Al-Arbaeen Square, Al-Khidr Mosque, and the Palm Walk in Suez.
Along with the awareness activities at the Authority’s family health units, centers, and hospitals, random blood sugar screenings, HbA1c tests, blood pressure measurements, and weight and height evaluations were conducted for beneficiaries to assess their nutritional status. Additionally, treatment was provided to senior citizens with diabetes, and their health was monitored at home.
Dr. Ahmed El-Sebki, Chairman of the Egypt Healthcare Authority and General Supervisor of the Universal Health Insurance Project, emphasized that this year's World Diabetes Day celebration is part of the Authority’s participation in the presidential initiative "Bidaya." He noted that the event served as an excellent opportunity to enhance prevention and raise awareness about diabetes. He pointed out that the campaign’s activities benefited 10,000 citizens in the six Universal Health Insurance governorates, including 1,000 children. This aligns with the Authority’s vision to focus on youth and raise their awareness while fostering healthy behaviors and lifestyles, contributing to a future of healthy and informed generations.
Dr. El-Sebki added that the campaign is part of the Authority’s ongoing efforts to support the health of citizens, in line with Egypt’s public health initiatives and the sustainable development goals of Egypt’s Vision 2030. He also highlighted that the campaign represents a model of integration between community awareness and direct healthcare services, reaffirming the Authority’s commitment to providing comprehensive, sustainable, and high-quality healthcare to all beneficiaries under the Universal Health Insurance system.
