Executive Director of the Healthcare Authority Presents the Minister of Environment with the Official GGHH International Recognition Certificate for Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital
As part of the National Environment Day 2025 celebrations, Dr. Amir El-Telwany, Executive Director of the Healthcare Authority, welcomed Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, and Major General Dr. Khaled Mubarak, Governor of South Sinai, during their inspection visit to Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital, a flagship facility of the Healthcare Authority in South Sinai.
The visit was part of an official tour of Sharm El-Sheikh, covering several eco-friendly projects launched under the "Green Sharm Initiative," which was introduced during the United Nations Climate Conference COP27. The initiative has been supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the European Union, the Japanese government, and the Global Environment Facility, alongside private sector investments.
Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital was selected for this prestigious visit due to its historic achievement as the first hospital in Egypt and Africa to receive international recognition from the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) Network. The hospital stands as a leading model of environmental sustainability in healthcare, incorporating innovative resource management solutions to minimize its carbon footprint while maintaining high-quality medical services.
During the tour, Dr. Yasmine Fouad praised the Healthcare Authority’s efforts in integrating environmental sustainability into Egypt’s healthcare system. She highlighted Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital as a benchmark for the green transformation of healthcare facilities, emphasizing its role in reducing carbon emissions and optimizing resource efficiency.
The Minister of Environment reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to pioneering environmental projects under the "Green Sharm Initiative," in collaboration with development partners, aiming to establish Sharm El-Sheikh as an eco-friendly city. She stressed that the healthcare sector is a key partner in these sustainability efforts through the adoption of green healthcare models.
Additionally, Dr. Fouad underscored the importance of replicating the Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital model across Egypt, recognizing the Healthcare Authority’s role in balancing world-class medical services with environmental responsibility.
Commenting on the visit, Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the Healthcare Authority and General Supervisor of the Universal Health Insurance Project, reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to implementing a comprehensive green transition strategy across its healthcare facilities.
He emphasized that this strategy aligns with Egypt’s national vision for environmental sustainability and the role of the health sector in addressing climate change.
Dr. El-Sobky also noted that Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital has achieved significant environmental milestones, including the installation of a 50-kilowatt solar power station and the development of an advanced medical waste treatment unit utilizing eco-friendly technologies. These initiatives reflect the Healthcare Authority’s dedication to upholding the highest environmental and healthcare quality standards.
At the conclusion of the visit, Dr. Amir El-Telwany presented Dr. Yasmine Fouad with the official GGHH international recognition certificate for Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital, highlighting the hospital’s pioneering role in achieving environmental sustainability within Egypt’s healthcare sector.
Dr. Ayman Rakha, Regional Director of the Healthcare Authority for the Suez Canal Region and Director of the South Sinai Branch, attended the visit, along with several senior officials from the Healthcare Authority, hospital administration, and environmental sustainability experts.
This milestone underscores the Healthcare Authority’s leadership in integrating green practices into Egypt’s healthcare system, setting a new benchmark for sustainable healthcare facilities in Africa and the Middle East.
