Dr. Ahmed Al-Subki, President of the Egypt Healthcare Authority and General Supervisor of the Universal Health Insurance System, attended the opening of the International Health Ministers' Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, under the theme "Strengthening Health Systems for a Better Future." The summit was attended by leaders from the health sector and policymakers from international health institutions.

During the summit, Dr. Al-Subki participated as the keynote speaker in a high-level session titled "Investing in Health and Technology," which discussed the importance of investments in digital technology and healthcare in strengthening global health systems, with a focus on utilizing artificial intelligence to improve healthcare quality and expand health coverage.

The session featured a distinguished panel, including Lt. Gen. Dr. Baha Eldin Zidan, President of the Egyptian Unified Procurement Authority; Dr. Deborah M. Barasa, Minister of Health, Kenya; Dr. Lilian Kanaan, General Manager of Roche Diagnostics Egypt & North Africa; Mr. Chinto Lingomba, Head of Customer Coverage for Africa at Standard Bank; Dr. Babatunde Omiyola, Head of Human Development at the African Development Bank, with the session moderated by Dr. Samah El-Saharty, Senior Health Policy Advisor at the World Bank and Commissioner of the Lancet Commission on Universal Health Coverage.

In his speech, Dr. Al-Subki reviewed Egypt's journey toward achieving universal health coverage, highlighting the progress made in reforming the Egyptian healthcare system to provide exceptional healthcare services. He emphasized the importance of strengthening primary care, which serves as the first point of access for citizens, and developing medical and therapeutic services according to the highest international quality standards, as well as working with the latest clinical protocols. Dr. Al-Subki stressed the importance of documenting and sharing Egypt's pioneering experience in transforming the healthcare system.

He also highlighted the pivotal role of digital transformation in delivering healthcare services, emphasizing the need to support spending on digital health and focusing on investments in artificial intelligence and digital health systems to shape future health systems. Dr. Al-Subki presented a roadmap to support the development of the digital infrastructure of healthcare facilities, digitizing medical services, and smart hospital technologies. He stressed the importance of supporting future strategies to enhance the use of artificial intelligence in the medical field and adopting modern healthcare technologies that will support and strengthen the health sector both in Egypt and globally.

Dr. Al-Subki mentioned that Egypt is set to open the first virtual hospital in Africa and the largest in the Middle East, utilizing smart digital solutions and telemedicine for diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Al-Subki also noted that Egypt has successfully achieved a significant reduction in out-of-pocket healthcare spending, which has decreased by 59%, with a 3% reduction compared to previous years. He emphasized the importance of focusing on measures that improve health outcomes and enhance the sustainability of health systems.

The first International Health Ministers' Summit gathers policymakers, health sector leaders, and experts to discuss global health challenges and strengthen global health systems. The summit hosts government officials, CEOs, and investors, with each session focusing on a central theme. The 2024 theme "Strengthening Health Systems for a Better Tomorrow" centers around building impactful partnerships.

The summit's discussions and interactive sessions covered various global health issues, including ways to enhance health systems for sustainable development. The summit also highlighted the latest initiatives in digital health, innovations in healthcare, investment opportunities, and discussions on health equity and addressing health justice gaps worldwide.
