The Egypt Healthcare Authority has announced the success of the first aortic aneurysm surgery using a covered stent with the EVAR technique for an elderly woman at Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital, which is part of the Egypt Healthcare Authority in South Sinai.
According to the statement from the Authority, the patient arrived at Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital, and after reviewing the case, it was discovered that she had an aortic aneurysm. The case was referred to the Vascular Surgery Department, where it was found that the risk of the artery bursting was over 80%. Following the treatment protocols, the medical team recommended performing an EVAR procedure to repair the aneurysm.
The procedure was successfully completed without any complications by a team of top consultants at Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital, including Dr. Ahmed Riyad and Dr. Sherif Hussein, Vascular Surgery Consultants at the hospital, with the support of the anesthesia team led by Dr. Ismail Abdel-Gawad, Anesthesia Consultant, and the excellent nursing team at Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital.
Dr. Ahmed El-Sebki, Chairman of the Egypt Healthcare Authority and General Supervisor of the Universal Health Insurance Project, confirmed that the Authority continues its efforts to provide all medical packages and offer exceptional healthcare services to beneficiaries of the Universal Health Insurance system, according to the highest global quality standards. He pointed out that the cost of the surgical intervention using the EVAR technique for a single operation would normally exceed one million pounds outside of the Universal Health Insurance coverage, but the patient only paid 400 pounds as a contribution, which reflects the state’s commitment to providing advanced healthcare under the Universal Health Insurance system.
Dr. El-Sebki explained that this achievement is due to the Authority’s highly skilled medical staff, particularly in specialized fields, which are among the most in-demand globally. This places the Authority among the top healthcare institutions worldwide in terms of service quality and professional excellence. He added, "Providing qualified medical staff is not just an achievement but a strategic necessity to ensure the delivery of world-class healthcare services for Egyptian citizens."
He emphasized that the Authority’s facilities, including hospitals, medical centers, and family medicine units, are equipped to the highest global standards in terms of construction and modern medical technologies. He also pointed out that the use of advanced techniques such as EVAR for aortic aneurysm treatment represents a significant step towards reducing surgical risks and speeding up recovery times, while ensuring safe treatment according to the latest medical guidelines and international treatment protocols.
It is worth mentioning that the EVAR-covered stent is one of the latest global treatments for aortic aneurysms and has been introduced as part of the new Universal Health Insurance system's service packages. This method provides several advantages, including the use of simpler anesthesia, less time under sedation, no need for blood transfusions, and no need for intensive care. The patient can return home the day after the surgery, compared to at least ten days with traditional open surgery.
