A common pathological condition in the sinuses is cavities located within the surrounding bones of the nose and above the upper eyebrows and jaws in the cheekbones. The sieve pockets are present on both sides of the nasal cavity and cause swelling of the lining of the sinuses, preventing mucus discharge, nasal blockage, and difficulty breathing through them, with swelling or pain in the area around the eyes.
Reasons
No known cause of sinus inflammation can cause some medical conditions such as cystic fibrosis, developing a cold, and having an intranasal problem, such as deviation of the nasal barrier or tumors.
Symptoms
- Ear and Dental Pain
- Sore throat and cough
- Runny nose
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling around the eyes or forehead
- Emitting an unpleasant smell from the mouth
Types of sinusitis:
1. Chronic sinusitis: occurs as a result of chronic allergies and asthma or nose abnormalities and lasts up to 12 weeks with treatment
2- Acute sinusitis: as a result of a viral respiratory infection or seasonal allergy, symptoms last for between (7 - 10) days and are cured after receiving appropriate treatment
3- Semi-acute sinusitis: the result of allergies or bacterial infection, especially if not treated and symptoms may last for 3 months
What is the difference between bacterial and viral sinusitis?
1. Viral sinusitis
Symptoms similar to those of the cold, such as sneezing and nasal congestion, usually heal on their own within 10 days
2: Bacterial sinusitis
It is characterized by thick secretions coming out of the nose with a yellow or green color, as well as pain in the facial area and needs to be treated with the use of antibiotics
3. Fungal pocket inflammation
It often develops in people with weakened immune systems such as AIDS or due to other diseases such as diabetes mellitus or lymphoma.
Prevention
- Stay Healthy
- Stay away from people with colds
- Washing hands with soap and water, especially before eating
- Avoid allergens
- Avoid cigarette smoke and contaminated air
- Use a device to hydrate and purify the air
When to visit a doctor?
When the condition is repeated, the treatment does not improve the symptoms, or the symptoms persist for more than 10 days, including severe headaches, vision problems, neck stiffness, and swelling around the eyes.
