The Egypt Health Care Authority has issued a document to activate clinical pharmacy across all its facilities in provinces applying the universal health insurance system.
According to the Authority's statement, the document aims to expand clinical pharmaceutical services, enhance medication management, and ensure the provision of high-quality healthcare.
The statement continues: This step reaffirms the Authority's commitment to activating the role of clinical pharmacy, an integral part of providing advanced medical care to those dealing with the universal health insurance system, ensuring clinical pharmacists gain the necessary skills and knowledge for comprehensive medication management within healthcare teams.
The Authority highlights six main pillars of the clinical pharmacy document, including “patient care, drug therapy knowledge, systematic care, effective communication, professionalism, and continuous development.”
The statement explains: "Patient care" includes direct patient care involving the assessment of their medication needs and monitoring drug therapy, in collaboration with medical service providers to achieve the best outcomes. "Drug therapy knowledge" focuses on developing comprehensive knowledge of pharmacy sciences and drug therapy to ensure the application of treatments based on scientific evidence.
Regarding systematic care and public health, the document emphasizes improving public health through developing treatment protocols and supporting decision-making to enhance healthcare quality metrics. "Communication" ensures the development of effective communication skills for interacting with patients and healthcare team members. Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the Egypt Health Care Authority and supervisor of the universal health insurance project, stated that activating clinical pharmacy is a cornerstone in enhancing healthcare quality within the Authority’s facilities. He confirmed that this initiative represents a qualitative leap that contributes to the Authority’s vision of providing integrated health services aligned with the highest international quality standards, thus improving public health indicators and enhancing the efficiency of services offered to citizens.
Dr. El-Sobky highlighted that the activation of clinical pharmacy enhances integration among various medical teams, with clinical pharmacists working alongside doctors to provide comprehensive care focused on meeting patients’ needs. He added that this integration helps improve the therapeutic experience of patients through precise pharmaceutical consultations and effective treatment monitoring.
