Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority for Health Care, received Mr. Alfredo Armengol, Vice President of Abbott International for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region, to discuss aspects of joint cooperation between the two sides in the fields of developing heart disease treatment, transferring and localizing advanced medical technology, and developing medical and research skills, in line with international standards.
Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky explained that the meeting witnessed a discussion of opportunities for cooperation in transferring the latest technologies for precise cardiac interventions, most notably the third-generation cardiac catheterization technology for replacing the aortic valve via catheter (TAVI), noting the start of the first training workshops for the Authority's medical teams on this advanced technology in August 2025, which contributes to achieving a real breakthrough in the treatment of heart diseases in the Authority's health facilities.
Al-Sobki added that the Egypt Healthcare Authority was the first to introduce this technology to Egypt, as it is the first entity in the government sector to perform advanced cardiac interventions using TAVI technology, through the first successful operation performed at Al-Nasr Specialized Children's Hospital in Port Said, one of the Authority's hospitals, which reflects the Authority's leadership in adopting the latest medical technologies globally.
The head of the Authority pointed out that during the meeting, the establishment of two centers of excellence for the treatment of heart diseases was discussed in cooperation with Abbott, one at the Suez Medical Complex and the other at the Nile Hospital in Aswan, as part of the Authority's plan to expand the establishment of specialized centers of excellence in various governorates implementing the comprehensive health insurance system.
Al-Sobki added that ways of cooperation in the fields of scientific research, human capacity building, and support for medical and research fellowship programs were also discussed, especially through cooperation with Kiel University in Germany, which contributes to developing the performance of Egyptian medical cadres and qualifying them according to the latest international training systems.
For his part, Mr. Alfredo Armengol, Abbott Vice President for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, expressed his happiness with the partnership with the General Authority for Healthcare, stressing the company's aspiration to deepen its partnership with the Authority for Healthcare in order to develop the heart disease treatment system in Egypt and transfer the latest advanced cardiac intervention technologies to its hospitals.
Armengol added that Abbott considers Egypt a strategic priority market, given its strong political will to develop the healthcare sector and its infrastructure qualified to accommodate advanced medical technology. He said, "Our partnership with the Healthcare Authority represents a successful model of international cooperation in supporting sustainable healthcare systems. We are committed to transferring expertise and technologies to Egyptian medical personnel and supporting fellowship and training programs in cooperation with Kiel University and the Authority's Centers of Excellence."
