Egypt Healthcare Authority Explores Strategic Healthcare and Medical Technology Cooperation with South Korea
Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the Egypt Healthcare Authority (EHA) and General Supervisor of the Universal Health Insurance Project, met with H.E. Kim Yong-hyun, Ambassador of South Korea to Egypt, at EHA headquarters in Cairo to explore avenues of strategic collaboration in healthcare services and medical technologies aimed at enhancing the quality and innovation of services under Egypt’s Universal Health Insurance system.
Dr. El-Sobky emphasized the Authority’s ambition to establish a strategic partnership with South Korea’s National Health Insurance (NHI). The goal is to exchange expertise in healthcare delivery and insurance systems, paving the way for knowledge transfer and system integration in Egypt’s growing healthcare infrastructure.
The meeting also explored the possibility of linking the Egypt Healthcare Authority with Samsung Medical Center to share best practices in hospital management, medical technology innovation, health system development, and medical training programs.
Dr. El-Sobky announced the organization of a dedicated roundtable to explore joint opportunities in the localization of medical device manufacturing, aligned with real market needs. This initiative will be coordinated with relevant Egyptian authorities and private sector investors from Korea. As part of this effort, a Korean investment delegation is expected to visit Egypt in September for a guided tour of EHA facilities in governorates currently operating under the Universal Health Insurance system.
The two sides also discussed building a technology platform to facilitate the transfer of Korean expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual hospital systems, with the goal of improving access to healthcare services and supporting the digital transformation of Egypt’s healthcare ecosystem.
Dr. El-Sobky also highlighted the Authority’s plans to enhance cooperation on medical waste management and the adoption of green healthcare standards to support environmental sustainability in line with Egypt’s national vision for a sustainable healthcare system.
In addition, the meeting covered opportunities to expand collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in the fields of emergency and crisis management, enhancing the quality of emergency medical services, and health workforce development through specialized training programs. This cooperation aims to strengthen EHA’s national role in delivering high-quality healthcare to both Egyptian citizens and refugees residing in Universal Health Insurance governorates.
Ambassador Kim Yong-hyun expressed appreciation for the ongoing partnership with the Egypt Healthcare Authority and reaffirmed South Korea’s support for expanding collaboration in healthcare innovation, technology, and sustainable partnerships. He emphasized that the partnership reflects the shared commitment of both nations to exchange expertise, promote innovation, and build enduring frameworks for cooperation in the medical sector.
