As part of the Fifth Annual Forum of the Egypt Healthcare Authority, the Authority, in collaboration with Takeda Egypt Pharmaceuticals, announced new pivotal steps towards establishing the first Cancer Excellence Center, in collaboration with the National Health Service (NHS) of the United Kingdom, for the treatment of cancer patients in Egypt.

This announcement follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding in March of this year, representing a strategic partnership aimed at supporting the healthcare system in the treatment of cancer patients in Egypt. The results of the fruitful collaboration between the Authority and Takeda were presented during the Fifth Annual Forum.

In his opening speech, Dr. Ahmed El-Sebki, Chairman of the Egypt Healthcare Authority and Supervisor of the Universal Health Insurance Project, emphasized that the establishment of the first Cancer Excellence Center at the Ismailia Medical Complex is a pioneering initiative aimed at achieving integration between the public and private sectors. He explained that the center would be a sustainable, scalable model for cancer treatment within the Authority’s system in Egypt.

Dr. El-Sebki added that the center is the result of Egyptian-British collaboration at the Ismailia Medical Complex, with shared expertise from The Christie Foundation, the first and largest cancer treatment institution in the UK. He further noted that the center will bring a transformative shift in cancer treatment services in Egypt and enhance comprehensive care and collaboration in the fields of cancer treatment and research.

He continued: "We believe strongly in national and international cooperation, and the center represents a sustainable and scalable model for cancer treatment within the Egypt Healthcare Authority’s system in Egypt." Dr. El-Sebki also emphasized that the partnership with Takeda is a significant step towards developing the healthcare sector's infrastructure and enhancing the capabilities and standards for cancer treatment, contributing to achieving the strategic goals of Egypt’s Vision 2030.

Additionally, Dr. El-Sebki mentioned that the center would serve as a model for establishing similar integrated centers within the Authority’s facilities across various governorates under the Universal Health Insurance System. The center will also focus on continuous training for healthcare providers to ensure specialized and effective treatment for patients.

Dr. Sami Khalil, General Manager of Takeda Egypt, expressed the company’s pride in this partnership with the Authority. He confirmed that the collaboration between the public and private sectors would have a significant positive impact on improving the Egyptian healthcare system in line with Egypt's Vision 2030. He added that the partnership includes the development of training programs for healthcare providers on the latest methods of cancer treatment, in addition to establishing a Cancer Excellence Center within the Authority’s healthcare facilities. Dr. Khalil also praised the important role played by the Stiller Consulting Company in the successful implementation of this project.

Professor Mark Sanders, Oncologist at The Christie NHS Foundation, stated: "We hope that our collaboration with NHS Global and the Egypt Healthcare Authority in their Cancer Excellence Center project will provide a broader opportunity to elevate the level of cancer patient care across Egypt. As a specialized cancer treatment hospital, The Christie NHS Foundation has been involved in assessing and reviewing the current cancer services within the Egypt Healthcare Authority's healthcare system and has provided an interactive workshop with the Authority's staff and the Ismailia Medical Complex. We were highly impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication displayed by all attendees, as well as their outstanding commitment to delivering the best patient-centered care."

It is noted that the Cancer Excellence Center will include an interdisciplinary team focused on providing comprehensive care for cancer patients according to global standards. This team will operate under unified management, measuring both outcomes and costs, and will share responsibility for patient results. A recent visit to the Ismailia Medical Complex by representatives from The Christie Foundation of the NHS took place earlier in November, as part of a broader collaboration between Egypt and the NHS. The visit included a three-day workshop with 14 international experts, both in-person and virtual, aimed at training healthcare providers within the Authority.

It is worth noting that the Fifth Annual Forum of the Egypt Healthcare Authority, held under the theme "Towards Global Excellence in Healthcare Services," was hosted in the New Administrative Capital, marking the five-year anniversary of the launch of the Universal Health Insurance System. The event was held under the patronage of the Prime Minister of Egypt, Professor Dr. Mustafa Madbouly, and attended by several ministers, governors, health officials, members of Parliament, representatives of global health organizations, ambassadors, professionals, and media leaders. This highlights the importance of the Egypt Healthcare Authority’s partnerships in improving Egypt’s healthcare system. This collaboration aims to improve citizens' health, provide excellent medical care, and create a positive and sustainable transformation in Egypt's healthcare sector.
