Suez Medical Complex Successfully Reattaches Severed Hand

The Egypt Healthcare Authority (EHA) announced the successful reattachment of a fully severed hand performed by a specialized medical team at the Suez Medical Complex, a facility under EHA’s network, using advanced microsurgical techniques. This operation marks the first of its kind conducted within EHA hospitals in Suez Governorate, underscoring the development of specialized medical services under Egypt’s Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS).

The Authority explained that the patient, a 35-year-old male, arrived at the Emergency Department of the Suez Medical Complex with a complete amputation of the left hand at the wrist level. The medical team immediately intervened, and the patient was swiftly transferred to the operating room.

The intricate procedure took approximately 12 continuous hours and involved reattachment of bones, tendons, arteries, veins, and nerves using microsurgical techniques. The surgery was successfully completed thanks to the collaboration of teams from plastic surgery, orthopedics, vascular surgery, and anesthesia, and the patient is now in a stable condition, receiving postoperative care and monitoring.

Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the Egypt Healthcare Authority and General Supervisor of the Universal Health Insurance Project, emphasized that this achievement reflects the advancement of EHA’s medical and human capabilities, stating:

"We possess outstanding medical personnel, advanced infrastructure, and cutting-edge equipment, enabling us to perform highly complex surgical procedures to the highest international quality standards across our hospitals under the Universal Health Insurance System."

Dr. El-Sobky further highlighted that this success marks a significant step in the ongoing development of healthcare services in Suez Governorate. He noted that the Plastic Surgery Unit at the Suez Medical Complex serves as a pioneering model in delivering highly specialized services, including hand surgeries, burn treatment, reconstructive surgeries, microsurgery, congenital anomaly corrections, and skin tumor surgeries — all now available under UHIS for the residents of Suez.
