The Egypt Healthcare Authority has announced the successful introduction of a new treatment technique for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) using a catheter at the Authority's hospitals in Luxor, the first governorate in Upper Egypt to implement the Universal Health Insurance system.
Dr. Ahmed El-Sebki, Chairman of the Egypt Healthcare Authority and General Supervisor of the Universal Health Insurance Project, explained that the successful procedure, performed for the first time in Luxor hospitals, is a significant step in enhancing the capacity of the healthcare system in Universal Health Insurance regions to provide advanced and safe treatment to our citizens.
Dr. El-Sebki further explained that the procedure, which required high-cost medical equipment, was made possible through the Universal Health Insurance system, ensuring that advanced medical services are provided to citizens at a low cost. The procedure itself cost more than 200,000 EGP, but the patient only paid 400 EGP as a contribution under the Universal Health Insurance system.
Dr. El-Sebki added, "The Authority continues to strive to provide the latest treatment techniques and advanced medical equipment, as demonstrated by this achievement. Hospitals under the Authority, such as Taiba Specialized Hospital, provide a wide range of advanced medical and therapeutic services in several specialties, including cardiac and thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, neurology, and gastrointestinal endoscopy. We are committed to expanding these services to reach all citizens in Universal Health Insurance regions."
Dr. El-Sebki confirmed that Taiba Specialized Hospital is the first accredited hospital in Upper Egypt under the Egypt Healthcare Authority. It offers a variety of medical services, including emergency care, cardiac and thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, and other important specialties.
The procedure was successfully performed on a 27-year-old female patient who was suffering from severe thrombosis in both lower limb veins, extending to the inferior vena cava in the abdomen. The patient arrived at Taiba Specialized Hospital with severe pain and swelling in the lower limbs and pelvis.
After conducting the necessary clinical examinations and imaging, it was found that the patient had severe thrombosis in the lower limb veins and pelvis, extending to the inferior vena cava in the abdomen. The patient was immediately admitted to the hospital for treatment with anticoagulants. The procedure was performed using interventional catheterization.
Following the successful procedure, the patient was monitored for 3 days in the hospital's inpatient department, where her symptoms and pain improved significantly. The patient was then discharged in good health and continues to be monitored at the hospital's outpatient clinic.
The procedure was conducted by a specialized medical team including Dr. Mohamed Hassan Abou Mansour, Consultant and Head of Vascular Surgery at Taiba Specialized Hospital, Dr. Shadi Magli, Vascular Surgery Consultant, and Dr. Ahmed Ayman Zein, Resident Vascular Surgeon. The case was carefully monitored by Dr. Ahmed Abdel-Hafeez, Anesthesia Specialist, alongside the nursing and technical staff in the hospital's catheterization unit, including Mohamed Sayed, Catheterization Unit Supervisor, Mohamed Hassan, Radiology Technician, Mustafa Gamal, Nurse in the Catheterization Unit, and Fatma Alyan, Nurse in the Catheterization Unit.
